Thione Seck isn't as well known internationally as fellow Senegalese singers Youssou N'Dour & Baaba Maal, but he may be that country's greatest singer. His songs have always shown strong Middle Eastern and Indian influences, which he blended skillfully with pure Senegalese mbalax. On this album, Seck features Indian & Egyptian musicians in a project reminiscent of Youssou N'dour's Egypt.
Many of the songs were previously recorded by Thione Seck with his group le Raam Daan, but for Orientation he reworks them with Indian & middle eastern instruments. The album also features a new version of Mouhamadou Bamba, which he originally recorded with Orchestra Baobab.
I'm a big fan of Thione Seck and this album may finally bring him the international acclaim he deserves. I highly recommend it. You can buy "Orientation" from cdRoots.
