Mon Electric Bijou create a dignified, country/post-punk sound quite obviously inspired by the likes of The Flying Burrito Brothers, The Only Ones, Neu! and Archers Of Loaf whether they intended to or not. Fronted by Martin Saz, the band was formed in the summer of 2002 in Montreal, Canada. Mon Electric Bijou's debut album, Songs Made From Plastic (2002), on which Martin Saz was the only musician, was considered by many as raw and experimental rock n’ roll. After the album was released, Saz needed a time-tested band to recreate the emotional vibes of the album. He then called his collaborators, Jason Sanchez and Martin Guilbo, to join his speeding wagon.
Inspired by the Keith Moon-Muppets drumming style of Jason Sanchez and by the soulful-immature bass licks of Martin Guilbo, Saz quickly wrote new songs for what would become Bijou's second album, If Blood Could Speak (2004). Their second effort greatly helped MEB to redefine and craft their sound. Unfortunately, for personal reasons, Martin Guilbo left the wagon after years of faithful partnership.
Freshly released, Bullets In The Penguin is without a doubt, Mon Electric Bijou’s finest effort. Every aspect of the project is an improvement from the last. To record the album, Sanchez & Saz teamed up with fellow musicians and friends Martin Robillard, whose bass lines can make a grown man cry and guitar guru Christian Aubin. Their creative efforts have patched the cracks on the band’s sonic foundation. Bottom line, Bullets In The Penguin is a raw, honest, unpolished and sensitive album…
REVIEWS
“What we get in Bullets In The Penguin is a down-to-earth rock album, one foot in yesterday’s grunge, one foot in the lyricism of a Michael Knott, a Leonard Cohen, or even a Bob Dylan… this is an album of merit.”
- Joel Dunham , CDreviews.com
“Bullets In The Penguin is an album of songs largely concerned with the extractions of the soul and not one to leave you particularly upbeat but it can't be denied that in their quality, style and technique…”
- Alex Lawson, Toronto
“Any of the songs on this record could be BIG rock numbers but MeB hold back in just the right ways.”
- Crayola, Diskant Magazine
“Unpolished, unfettered, and unapologetic for mood swings out of their control, this band delivers honesty on a silver Fender.”
- New Music Canada
“For every guitar chord you've heard before, there's a unique phrasing that you most certainly have not.”
- Sellout Magazine
“…well-crafted songs. Mon Electric Bijou shows that you can create a solid song without doing anything flashy.”
- RocknWorld
“…this is an album to make every rhythm guitarist jealous – there’s nothing difficult here but a load of ideas, a good voice, and a talent for making original music.”
- Cool Noise Magazine
